What is FMGE?

FMGE, or the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination, is a licensing exam conducted by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS). It is designed for Indian citizens or Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs) who have earned medical degrees from institutions abroad. The exam is scheduled twice a year, with sessions usually held in June and December. Passing FMGE allows candidates to gain provisional or permanent registration with the Medical Council of India (MCI) or a State Medical Council (SMC), enabling them to practice medicine in India.

FMGE 2025: Eligibility criteria

The NBEMS decides the eligibility criteria for FMGE 2025 for both Indian nationals and OCIs. These criteria consist of specific rules and conditions that candidates must meet in order to qualify for the exam. The conditions cover aspects such as nationality, qualifications and documentation. Failing to meet these requirements will make candidates ineligible to take the exam. Here is the detailed eligibility criteria.

  • Candidates must be Indian citizens or overseas citizens of India.
  • They must hold a primary medical qualification from a recognised institution. Additionally, the institution must be confirmed by the concerned Indian Embassy in that country.
  • Aspirants must submit documents as proof that they successfully completed and qualified in the final examination of their primary medical course on or before the specified date.
  • Candidates who completed their undergraduate and postgraduate medical education in certain countries are exempted from FMGE. Such candidates can directly apply to the MCI or SMC for registration and begin practicing in India.

The countries exempted from the screening test include:

  • Australia
  • Canada
  • New Zealand
  • United States of America
  • United Kingdom

Documents required

NBEMS may ask candidates to submit additional documents, if any doubt arises during the determination of the eligibility of the candidate. These documents include

  • Address proof (such as PAN card, voter ID, passport, driving license, or Aadhaar card).
  • Recent passport-sized photographs.
  • Proof of date of birth (such as a matriculation certificate).
  • Copy of 10+2 passing certificate and mark sheet.
  • Internship certificate (if completed abroad).
  • Fail certificate or result for ex-candidates.
  • Proof of category (such as SC, ST, or OBC certificate).
  • Equivalence certificate from the Association of Indian Universities (for candidates who completed 10+2 abroad).
