Many of the medical aspirants in India pursue their medical degrees from other nations. However, to practice medicine in India, they must prove their medical acumen according to Indian standards. Students need to clear the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) to become eligible to practice in India. Henceforth, the students can register in the National Medical Commission (Medical Council of India) and state medical councils. FMGE Examination
The FMGE, the medical licensing examination that opens the door to Indian healthcare, takes place under the guidance of the National Board of Examinations (NBE). The prevalence of this national-level exam is twice a year, in June and December. The exam is objective-type and has 300 questions. The test has two parts, Part A and Part B, of 150 marks each. Candidates can make as many attempts as needed to pass the examination. There is no age limit to appear for FMGE.
Tentative FMGE Exam Date 2026
The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) has officially announced the tentative date of the FMGE December 2025 session. The exam is scheduled to be held tentatively on 17th January 2026.
Tentative Exam Date: Saturday, 17th January 2026
Shift 1: 09:00 AM – 11:30 AM
Shift 2: 02:00 PM – 04:30 PM
Once the NBEMS confirms this schedule, the official final confirmation will be published through the information bulletin on the NBEMS website.
Eligibility Criteria
The aspirants seeking to appear in the FMGE in 2026 should check their eligibility criteria. The candidates need to be a citizen of India.
- The candidates need to furnish the details of documents such as an eligibility certificate, provisional pass certificate, and primary medical qualification certificate.
- The candidate must submit proof of having passed/qualified for the MBBS final examination.
- Candidates must check the attestation requirement as desired and mandatory.
Exemption from the FMGE Examination
- Candidates who have passed their Medical degree/MBBS before March 15, 2002, need not appear in the FMGE examination and can practice in India.
- Candidates who have passed their Medical degree/MBBS from the below-mentioned countries need not appear in the FMGE examination.
- United States of America
- United Kingdom
- Australia
- Canada
- New Zealand
These candidates can practice in India after obtaining a permanent or provisional certificate from the National Medical Commission (NMC).
How to Register for FMGE in 2026?
Students can register for the FMGE online through the official website of the National Board of Examinations. It is better to use a computer or a laptop and avoid mobile phones for registration purposes. The application form should be filled diligently, furnishing the correct details in the online form. The National Board of Examinations issues admit cards to the candidates. The candidates must appear in the examination with a hard copy of the admit card. The examination is conducted across all major cities in India.
FMGE Exam Pattern
The candidates must be well-versed in the exam pattern. The examination has two parts, Part A and Part B, of 150 marks each. The duration of each section is two and a half hours, therefore the total marks are 300, and the exam is five hours long.
All questions carry equal marks. There is no negative marking for the examination. Candidates must attempt all 300 multiple-choice questions.

FMGE Results
The FMGE result is declared a few weeks after the exam. The candidates need to score 50 % to qualify and pass the examination. It means the candidates have to score 150 marks out of 300 questions. The students can download the result in pdf format from the NBA’s official website. The shortlisted candidates are given a provisional registration from the National Medical Council or the state medical council.
