NExT has been deferred for final-year MBBS students of the 2019 batch till further notice

The National Medical Commission (NMC) publish a public notice confirming the NExT has been postponed till further directions on the advice of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW). However, there is no clarity regarding the NExT mock test announced by the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi, on the 28th of July 2023.

“All the stakeholders are hereby informed that the National Exit Test (NExT) examination is deferred on the advice of the Ministry, dated 11.07.2023, till further directions,” stated the public notice issued by the NMC Secretary Pulkesh Kumar.

The NExT was recently mandated under the National Medical Commission (NMC) Act to replace the final MBBS examination and act as a licentiate exam to register and practice modern medicine in India. Additionally, it was recommended as the basis for determining eligibility and ranking for admission to PG medical courses.

Starting from the beginning, several medical associations, medical professionals, and MBBS students were not satisfied with the implementation of NExT .

Recently, at an event at AIIMS Raipur, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya announced that there would be no NExT Exam for the 2019 MBBS Batch. Even though the minister assured that the exam would not replace the final MBBS examinations, there was no official announcement regarding confirmation.

Now with the NMC update, the NExT exam has been postponed till further notice from the Health Ministry. However, the future of the NExT examinations and its implementation is still in question.
