FMGE is your gateway to Indian medicine
FMGE, short for Foreign Medical Graduate Examination, is a licensing exam conducted by the National Board of Examination (NBE) in India. This examination tests whether medical graduates from foreign universities meet the stringent standard to practice medicine in India.
Eligibility Criteria
Both Indian nationals who have completed their medical education abroad and overseas Indians (OCI) take this examination to obtain licensure to practice medicine in India.
The candidate should have completed their medical education at a university approved by the Medical Council of India (MCI) and must have their qualifying certification attested by the embassy if required.
Medical graduates from countries like Canada, Australia, the United States of America, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom do not need to attempt the FMGE exam. Instead, they can obtain a provisional or permanent certificate from the national medical commission or state medical council. With this, they can practice medicine in India.
Exam Overview and Format
The FMGE exam is conducted biannually, usually in June and December. This exam was introduced in 2002 to strictly assess the medical knowledge and skills of international medical graduates and evaluate whether they are deemed to practice in India.
The FMGE exam is subjectively divided into two parts, consisting of a total of 300 questions. Each paper consists of three sections, A, B, and C, respectively, with 50 questions and 50 minutes allotted to each of the sections.
