Foreign Medical Graduates Examination; All You Need To Know About Exam Pattern & Syllabus

Many of the medical aspirants in India pursue their medical degrees from other nations. However, to practice medicine in India, they must prove their medical acumen according to Indian standards. Students need to clear the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) to become eligible to practice in India. FMGE Syllabus; In a Nutshell

The National Board of Examinations releases the detailed syllabus three to four months before the FMGE exam. The prevalence of the exam is twice a year, in June and December. The examination has two parts: Pre and Para Clinical Subjects, and Clinical Subjects. It covers a wide spectrum of medical knowledge essential for practicing medicine competently. Both Part A and Part B consist of 150 marks each.

Pre and Para Clinical Subjects

Anatomy: This section comprises 17 questions, testing candidates’ understanding of the structure and organization of the human body.

Physiology: With 17 questions, this section assesses candidates’ knowledge of the physiological mechanisms of major organ systems and their responses to various stimuli.

Biochemistry: Covering 17 questions, this section evaluates candidates’ comprehension of metabolic pathways, enzyme functions, and hormonal interactions.

Forensic Medicine: With 10 questions, this section focuses on the application of legal aspects of medical practice, interpretation of autopsy reports, and understanding common injuries and poisoning.

Pathology: Comprising 13 questions, this section examines candidates’ understanding of the general principles of disease processes, common pathological findings in different organ systems, and their clinical implications.

Microbiology: With 13 questions, this section tests candidates’ knowledge of microorganisms, their virulence factors, and antimicrobial susceptibility.

Pharmacology: Covering 13 questions, this section assesses candidates’ understanding of mechanisms of action, indications, adverse effects, and drug interactions of commonly used medications.

Clinical Subjects

Medicine and Allied Subjects: This section encompasses various sub-topics such as Medicine (33 questions), Dermatology and STD (5 questions), Psychiatry (5 questions), and Radiotherapy (5 questions), totaling 48 questions. It assesses candidates’ understanding of medical diagnosis, treatment, and management of diseases.

General Surgery and Allied Subjects: Covering General Surgery (32 questions), Anesthesiology (5 questions), Radiodiagnosis (5 questions), and Orthopedics (5 questions), totaling 47 questions. This section evaluates candidates’ knowledge of surgical procedures, anesthesia, imaging techniques, and musculoskeletal conditions.

Pediatrics: With 15 questions, this section focuses on the medical care and treatment of infants, children, and adolescents.

Ophthalmology: Covering 15 questions, this section assesses candidates’ understanding of eye diseases and their management.

Otorhinolaryngology: With 15 questions, this section evaluates candidates’ knowledge of ear, nose, and throat disorders and their treatment.

Community Medicine: Comprising 30 questions, this section focuses on public health, preventive medicine, and community healthcare management.

Obstetrics and Gynecology: With 30 questions, this section covers women’s reproductive health, pregnancy, childbirth, and related medical conditions.

In total, the FMGE syllabus consists of 300 questions,covering both pre-para clinical subjects and clinical subjects, to evaluate candidates’ readiness to practice medicine in the Indian healthcare system.

A Breakdown of FMGE Exam Including Many of Its Facets

Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) or MCI screening test is a national level exam. The exam is conducted by the National Board of Examinations (NBE) twice a year in the months of June and December.

It is a licensure exam for candidates who are citizens of India/Overseas citizens of India who possess a medical degree awarded by a foreign college of university. Passing this exam is necessary for getting Provisional or Permanent registration with the Medical Council of India (MCI).

FMGE Exam Pattern

FMGE is a computer-based exam comprising two papers. First paper should be attempted in the morning session whereas the second in the forenoon session. The duration of the exam is 2 hours and 45 minutes per session. This includes the 15 minutes for the tutorial. The language used in the exam is English.

The exam comprises 300 questions. A total of 150 questions for each paper. Test duration of each paper is 150 minutes. No negative marking is involved and weightage of MCQs will vary.

Eligibility Criteria For FMGE

The eligibility criteria For FMGE of a candidate must be a citizen of India or an Overseas citizen of India. Candidates need to possess primary medical qualification which is confirmed by the Indian Embassy to be a recognised qualification for enrolment as medical practitioner in the country in which the Institution awarding the said qualification is situated. It is necessary for the candidate to show the proof of passing the primary medical qualification on or before the cutoff date.

FMGE Exam: Step by Step Instructions for Filling Up the Application Form

The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) has invited applications for the FMGE 2023 December session. It is scheduled for 20 January 2024. Foreign medical graduates who have completed their medical degree from outside India must sit the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE). This is necessary to be eligible for a Medical Council of India (MCI) license.

Candidates should be extremely careful while filling out the FMGE Application Form. The information provided in the application form will be verified with the submitted documents. Those candidates who are deemed eligible will be issued FMGE admit cards. This will happen once the document verification process is over.

Follow the steps mentioned below to fill out the FMGE application form.

Register Online

Visit the official website of nbe.edu.in. Look for the ‘FMGE online registration tab’. Click on the tab to get the FMGE application form link. Candidates should carefully read the instructions mentioned and check the ‘I have read the instructions’ checkbox to proceed with the application process’.

Furnish Details

Candidates should provide their basic details as asked in the registration tab. The information required is name, date of birth, Email ID, and contact details for verification. Save the above-mentioned details to get login credentials in the mail.

Generate Login ID

Once the details are saved, a login id will be created on the provided email ID. The candidate should log in with the provided credentials. The password would be updated later according to the directions mentioned in the FMGE application form.

Fill out Application Form

Candidates should fill out the application form with the correct details. Enter citizenship, qualification, internship and other details as per official documents. These details should be filled out carefully. They will be verified with official documents.

Choose Exam Centre

Once the FMGE Application Form is completed the candidates need to select the exam centre. FMGE Exam centres are allotted on a first come first serve basis. Make sure you fill out the application immediately to get the preferred exam centre.

Upload documents

Once the exam centre is selected, the candidate needs to upload certain scanned documents. These include passport-size photographs and the signature in the prescribed format.

Application Fee Payment

The application fee submission is the most important step. Without fee payment, the application form would be regarded as incomplete. The admit card would not be issued as a result.

Final Submit and Print Form

Once the application fee payment is done, the candidate should click on the final submit on FMGE Application Form. It is advised to print it for future reference.
